What Does Added Retention Mean?

The plastic (Kydex) we use to make our holsters comes in several different thicknesses. We determine the appropriate thickness for each firearm based on it's size/shape/weight and how those factors impact the ease of drawing and reholstering the firearm. Some guns work best with thinner plastic, but not all designs or colors are available in the thinner material. When this is the case, we will offer the thicker plastic with the notation that it creates added retention. This means the draw requires more force. We recommend going with the prints/colors that do not add retention for the best user experience, but understand that sometimes people are willing to give up a little convenience for aesthetic reasons. The thicker Kydex doesn't cause any issues with safety or retention, but does require a very intentional drawstroke that takes some practice to master.
